NARS Fall 2016 Color Collection

I know you're probably thinking, "Fall? It's barely Summer!" Well I live in the part of the Bay Area that's enclosed in fog for the month of July so it's really no different for me. I don't mind it really because I can drive twenty, hell sometimes ten, minutes away from my house and I'll be in sunshine.

Okay enough of me and my ranting of another summer in the fog. Here's what you really tuned in for:

According to the press release, provided by the NARS PR team, "cheeks are sculpted to new heights by complexion-enhancing hues from light caramel to espresso. Lids shimmer with shade of iridescent white, rose gold, and deep indigo, while lips go matte in saturated tones of garnet and bordeaux. New Velvet Eyeliners add rich dimension with pigments that glide on smooth and blend evenly, creating the perfect base for smoky lids or a fine line for a bold look."

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed by the lack of blushes in this Fall collection. Also, where are the glosses and what, no eyeshadow duos? Because I am a fan, I'm willing to give this collection a chance. Luckily, I am also a pencil hoarder so I will definitely check out these new eyeliners. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencils are the reason why I wear matte lipsticks again so I can't wait to swatch these rich colors.

This collection will come to a counter near you at a NARS boutique or online on their site on July 15. Expect the collection to show up at Sephora, department, and specialty stores on August 1.

Where the hell have I been and just where do I think I'm going?

You know sometimes when you think you're just going to take a small time out for some "me time" or in my case...have another baby?

Well that small break turned into a year off. I guess I needed it with what was going on in my world - baby girl #2 and a job in Silicon Valley that didn't quite pan out.

Like my now 10 month old girl that is taking delicate baby steps and preparing herself to run amok in our un-baby proofed home, this is my attempt to reconnect again in the blogging hemisphere.

Maybe I lost all my readers (not like I had a lot to begin with) but I know I had a few. Here's hoping this works out and I gain a whole new set of readers.

Will I discuss makeup? Well duh, yeah that's what brought me here (and hopefully you) in the first place. I will say having two little girls and living in one of the most expensive places in the US (Bay Area, CA) my spending habits have become modest but luckily I still have access to free samples (NARS, I am your devoted, faithful fan for life). Will shoes and booze still be involved? Well I am still breathing, aren't I?

I am rethinking what I would like to write about:
Makeup tips for the busy mom.....How not to look like a hot mess at the drop off line of your kids school....Finding your sexy again when you have that random date night at The Elephant Bar?

Please bear with me as it took a good 14 months just to get me to write this passage. I have been toying of turning this beauty blog into a general peek into my mind and what projects I may get myself into. I have also worked as a freelance makeup artist assisting other fabulous hair/makeup artists. I've had a blast working weddings and doing looks for stage.

I also just turned 41 in September and not really caring about labeling anything right now.

But to keep on topic here's a relevant photo:

Just three things that reminded me why I became obsessed with beauty products. 

Diptyque Baies candle - Blackcurrant and roses. How fabulous is that? It's their top selling scent for a reason. You can dress up a card table and folding chair with this beautiful glass candle. The one featured is the mini (2.4 oz) - I have since upgraded to the 6.5 oz number. And if I were a Real Housewife of (Insert City here) you bet your ass I would have the largest candles (that burns 220 hours and is over $200) littered all over my estate. I am a full fledge addict. I also have Santal and Roses. 

Kat von D's Interstellar palette came out some time last Winter and it's my first palette. Okay confession time - I was a fan of Kat's in the early days of Miami Ink and then on her own spin-off LA Ink. But along the way, I felt that she became too LA Industry and mix in her relationship with Jesse James...well the girl just lost me. I didn't want anything to do with her, regardless how successful her makeup line was. It wasn't till one of my friends, ahem Christina, called me out on my judgmental ways and I gave it a chance. Low and behold, I was smitten. I also let Kat back into my life by then purchasing her Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette. I'm even wearing it as I type. The colors are soft and easily blendable without being chalky and on top of a good shadow base (NARS Smudgeproof Eye Shadow Base) I get a full 8 hours of wear. 

Okay my Tom Ford glasses are not technically a beauty product, but I they do make me feel pretty and I can see.

I really hope this wasn't too painful to read. Maybe this was the writing exercise I needed. Maybe I'll get around to reviewing the wonderful NARS palettes I created with the awesome voucher the PR folks gifted me. Maybe I'll write about how I'm desperately trying to not be THAT MOM. Or maybe I'll just write once a week or twice a month to let you know what has been in my beauty rotation, sneakers I've acquired or wine I can't stop drinking.

NARS Celebrates 20 years of Audacious Beauty

I am so excited for virtual calendar to read September 1st, however, I do miss hearing the sound of paper tearing as you welcome the new month. Luckily the news I'll be blasting will help me get over that.

As some of you know, I am a huge NARS fan girl. I always dream of meeting Monsieur Francois Nars to thank him personally for changing the way I embrace makeup and his intense colors just celebrate women of all skin tones. But mostly for creating a lipstick line that for once didn't dry out my lips or make them itch and feel raw the next morning.

He one upped himself. How, you ask? By paying tribute of the introduction of his namesake brand, launching a collection of 12 unforgettable lipsticks, by launching a new lipstick collection of course!

The Audacious Lipstick Collection.

The innovative, pigment-rich formula delivers and intesnse, full-coverage finish in a single stroke, while nutrient rich ingredients are known to smooth, moisturize and volumize. The 40-shade collection features a full range of provocative hues from neutral nudes to striking reds and bold pinks. I dug in a little deeper about the formula and finish. I was told that the formula is a cross between a satin and the cinematic finish lipstick from the holiday/Guy Bourdin collection. I adored that collection because not only was the lipstick was emollient but the pigment was intense. I can't wait to receive my sample!

We didn't even talk about packaging. As you also know, I am quite the packaging whore and really not ashamed to admit it. I just wish I could keep my bathroom/bedroom clean at all times so I can invite my girlfriends and sisters to just look at some of the amazing stuff I have accumulated because I thought the packaging was just so cool or adorable!

The Audacious Lipsticks are housed in a modern, matte-black metallic case with a magnetic closure, the specially designed sculpted bullet is embossed with the NARS logo. I really love the original simple matte black finish with the white NARS text square lipstick tube. They are just so chic, cool and because of the rubber matte finish feel of the tube, it's also a little punk. I really can't wait to get this in my hands!

Didn't I say that already? Yes, that's how excited I am!

The colors really run the gamut to sultry wines, burgundy, hot pink, romantic rose pink, seductive reds to even wearable, office safe reds to corals and of course my favorite - nudes! You'll have no excuse of not being able to find a shade to suit your needs and moods. To incite just that more obsessive behavior, 10 shades of the collection are exclusive only to Barneys New York stores.

The face of the collection is also something to talk about. It's no other than the renowned actress Charlotte Rampling. Celebrated for her work in films like, "Farewell My Lovely," "Swimming Pool," "Angel Heart," "Stardust Memories," but she is probably best known for the controversial film, "The Night Porter." Just do a online search and a certain film still will pop up and you'll see why. Actually, the same image will probably pop-up when you enter her name in any search engine.

Because of her bold choices and independent spirit, Charlotte has created fascinating characters on-screen. Charlotte's individual, daring style and natural elegance on and off the camera made her the perfect fit to embody the Audacious Lipstick Collection.

Coming Soon: 3.1 Phillip Lim for NARS Nail Collection

Hey nail fanatics - great news. There's a new NARS collaboration and when I mean coming soon I mean 'tomorrow' soon! You can find this collection inspired by "colors that exist in the shadows" in NARS boutiques and online Tuesday, July 15. Or you can wait when they turn up at Sephora and Dept/Specialty boutiques on August 1, 2014. 

Since Fall 2007, NARS and Phillip Lim have collaborated for the the past 14 seasons on the 3.1 Phillip Lim runway show during NY Fashion Week. This collection celebrates their work blending Phillip's signature style with NARS' iconic bold style and daring beauty aesthetic. 

The nine limited editions shades include:

Anarchy: Angora

Wrong Turn: Graphite

Shutter: Black Sea Green

Other Side: Bitter Chocolate

Gold Viper: Champagne

Crossroads: African Violet

I was lucky enough to receive Other Side and Insidious from the awesome PR folks at NARS. Let me tell you just how pleased I am. The only thing that I'm bummed about is that the colors I chose are suitable for crisp winter nights. Well it's a good thing that I love breaking beauty expectations and summer nights here in the Bay Area requires warm layers!

Not only are the colors something to chat about but so is the bottle and brush!

The original square handle could be a bit much for petite hands to handle but now the square top pops off and reveals a traditional brush handle.

As you can see the new brush is flatter and wider allowing to cover more surface area with fewer brush strokes. Also, the brush fits nicely along the cuticle. I can cover my nail with just three brush strokes: middle and sides. 

Here's Other Side on my nails:

The first application is a bit streaky but I applied the second coat a little thicker and got the opaque results I wanted. I found a nail to be a bit streaky after the second coat so I went ahead and applied a light third coat. That nail didn't look thick and matched the others. I did apply my favorite base and shiny top coat for extra shine. I love this dark chocolate shade even in the summer. Although it gets me anxious for the fall and I also get mad chocolate cravings! I get great wear time with NARS polishes: 3-4 days on my nails and a good 2 weeks on my toes.

Insidious on my toes:

 

A beautiful blackened bronze that can lead to a deep metallic olive or black brown. I really like this shade with black sandals or even nude peep toe shoes. 

The formula also has a new high gloss finish. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference since I never had a problem with the original formula and bottle packaging. But I can appreciate the new brush. However, I can see a possible problem with the bristles of this brush. If you jam the brush in the bottle quickly or incorrectly, you can splay the bristles and they won't lay flat and nice. I noticed a few bristles askew on my new brush and this was the first time using my bottle. I didn't experience this with my older NARS polishes. I will now have to be careful if I buy another NARS polish as the all the older shades will be phased out and repackaged in the new bottles over time. 

First improving the lip gloss formula and packaging and now this? 

Well played NARS...well played!

Why Fix It It Ain't Broke?

Now you are probably thinking that Lex likes to try everything just about once and is fearless of change. And you'd be wrong to think and assume that! I find that the older I am getting the more I cling on to things and fear change.

Why would you change something if everyone loves it and didn't have a problem with it in the first place? 

Like the Coke formula back in 1985? McDonald's apple pie - not sure about the year but it use to be deep fried and delicious and now it's baked and just tastes, I don't know - weird? I can also go on and on about systems used at my previous job. When you've been employed by a company for seven years, you see a lot of people come in and try to change the system and then go because not everyone was ready for change.

Now that was a change I did get behind.

How does this apply to cosmetics? I'm getting there.

A few short years back, like when I was on maternity leave, I discovered a lip gloss that didn't leave my lips dry and itchy the day after I wore it. It was by NARS and I discovered it by reading one of my favorite blogs. I remember Karen waxing on and on about her love for the shade Supervixen, a metallic mauve and I was just smitten by the name. This was a few weeks after the birth of my daughter. I was achy, tired, bloated, simply a mess.

I needed something called Supervixen on my puffy face! 

Five years later the love has been quite strong. I found the one shade I always had to have a backup for, Sweet Revenge, a sheer grapefruit that blended beautifully on top of any nude pink shade I had. It was my security blanket and I could go from feeling demure to well...smoky eye bad girl depending on my eye look. 

When NARS announced a new formula to their lip glosses, my interest piqued and I was also a bit fearful.

What if I don't like it? What if the unscented gloss now had some weird scent that will nauseate me? What if...god forbid...it made my lips, dry and itchy? Ugh, the suspense was killing me. 

Until I found a goodie package on my doorstep today.

So what changed?

Now the glosses contain even more nourishing ingredients that help smooth fine lines and keeps the lips supple, while sea lavender helps against signs of aging. Sounds great, right? What helps even more...all 23 original colors have been revamped including 7 new shades. That's right 30 shades of nourishing love for your pucker!

My thoughts? Well for one I am very happy about the packaging. The clear tube allows you to see a true representation of the shade versus the frosty tube of the original formula. You couldn't really tell what the color was:

So back to Sweet Revenge. It's the perfect pink nude for me. It's described as a pink grapefruit so you'd expects some coral or orange. Not on me...it's all pink beige with a super subtle shimmer.

Top is the old formula and bottom is the new formula. I apologize if you can't see but the newer version feels a bit more pink on me. That's not a bad thing. What I love most is that it's a bit thinner than the original. It goes on easily but because I feel like it's thinner and a bit more sheer, I need at least three coats to make somewhat of an impact on me and it's not by much either. I definitely need to wear this on top of lip liner or lipstick. I do like to wear this solo if I'm taking my daughter to school on a day off and I haven't gotten ready for the day yet or I'm on the train to work in my gym gear before I've showered and made myself up for the day. When worn by itself, it does enhance my natural lips a bit but since I have some discoloration on my lips I would have loved more opaqueness but I'm starting to get over that. The shimmer is very subtle so don't let the color swatch on the site scare you!

The other shade I tried is new to the collection, Tasmania (pink cantaloupe):

It looks like a pink coral in the tube - perfect for Spring/Summer naturally. On my lips, it's super sheer and would need a boost from a pink nude or coral to amplify the color. I still like this shade regardless. Also, it's named after the island state of Australia. Sorry, but when I see the word, Tasmania, I am thinking of that adorable spastic animated character from Looney Tunes and I believe he was like a rat brown color and the real Tasmanian devil are black. I just appreciate the ease of this shade - perfect gloss to throw into your bag in case of an emergency!

Lastly, Easy Lover (sheer, hot pink):

I love this shade on top of fuchsia for extra shine but surprisingly I get a lovely look when this tops off a pink nude shade.

This is the only decent picture I was able to take of Easy Lover on my lips - as you can see, it's a VERY sheer hot pink.

So again, I'm very pleased with this new formula. I love that it's thinner and it comes out of the tube - not a gloppy mess. Also, the doe foot applicator feels great on the lips. There's no scent so hyper sensitive noses can rejoice! It may be a drawback for some that it goes on so thin, you may need three extra coats or ten extra minutes to layer to get some type of color on the lips, well from these light shades. I have yet to test the darker, brighter colors.

One of my Favorite Nordstrom Events...

Aside from the Women's/Children's Half Yearly and Anniversary sale there's another deal time that really gets me going....BUY 2 MASCARAS GET ONE FREE!! 

I know this is a pretty pricey way to score a free mascara but if you are fanatical about certain luxury brands..ahem..cough..CHANEL INIMITABLE...and you like to try out other brands...hello YSL or Trish McEvoy. 

This is a bi-annual event - I believe the next one should be around Fall. I could be wrong so this is your chance to make friends with the super friendly Nordstrom Cosmetic Sales Assistants. They will keep you up-to-date. Trust me, they will answer all questions and give you all the necessary details if that means you will come back to them. 

Last time I tried YSL Babydoll (meh)....Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Stretch (meh but better than the Babydoll) and my usual Chanel Inimitable Intense. This time I went back to strong with Chanel - Le Volume/Inimitable Intense. I hear from the MUA at the counter that layering the two gives you ultimate lashes and you know I love a challenge! I wanted to give another YSL formula another shot so according to Sales Associate that helped me the Volume Effet Faux Cils is comparable to GA's original Eyes to Kill formula - another high end mascara that I just adore!

I hope you scored in-store, like I did, or you had time to place your order. Last time, I didn't hesitate to put in that order - I think I was barely awake while giving my shipping info. And if you were lucky enough to get your mascaras, what ended up in your shopping basket? 

Life of a beauty addict....

If you are a Bumble fanatic like me, your ears stand up at attention when you hear a new hair product is rolling out SOON.

Can you imagine if your stylist tests it out on you before it's even on the shelves, let alone a price tag?

One of my favorite hair serums is the Hairdresser's Invisible Oil, well it sounds like a collection based around that is about to launch. Since I'm a lucky girl and faithful to my stylist, he tested out the shampoo, conditioner and this hair primer on my dehydrated locks:

Please overlook the lip gloss left on the rim of my wine glass, was a long drive and day at work, and please focus on the bottle! I apologize, I should have snapped a photo of the back or at least check the ingredients to see if anything popped out at me. From what I remember, it smells fantastic and left my hair soft for days and lustrous. Then again, I'm assuming the combination of the shampoo, conditioner, primer and oil played a key part in this effect.

I cannot report a launch date or price but do know, it's coming soon!!

In a perfect world, he'd blow out my hair regularly but if that were the case, I'd have to bribe him regularly with Prada.

Bb Pret-a-Powder...aka..sexy hair powder!

Doing something a little different by taking a break from makeup and focusing on my love for Bumble hair products, namely a new hair powder the company introduced.

Honestly, one of the best purchased I have made early this year. I have used Bumble for many years and I have even taken breaks switching brands because every now and then I like to experiment and see what else is out there. I try products from every price point - drugstore, salon and specialty department stores. But I always come back to Bumble and bumble.

As you can read from the bottle "it's equal parts dry shampoo, style extender and volume in a pinch" and I couldn't agree more.

From the Bumble and bumble site, here are the main components:

Polysilicone-22: a new hybrid silicone powder which specifically targets oils and absorbs them while remaining invisible on the hair.Helps to provide dry cleansing, leaving hair clean and refreshed.

• Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Tapioca Starch, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour : Natural starches that provide absorbency and act as bulking ingredients. They help to provide texture and volume to the hair. Helps to provide dry cleansing, leaving hair clean and refreshed.
• Silica : Very lightweight, absorbent powder that remains transparent on the hair. Helps to remove oil and other impurities from the hair.
• Montmorillonite : a natural clay from the Poitou-Charentes region of France that absorbs oil to dry cleanse.
• As you know, I have tried many dry shampoos - even reviewed them here but it never really pumped up the volume of my hair quite well as this powder. 
• I apply directly at the roots at the top of the crown and also a few layers underneath. If I am applying after a sweaty workout, I also apply at the sides of my head (temples) where I tend to sweat a lot. I was instructed by my stylist to shake the bottle and apply it to my hair as if I was shaking salt to season my food. This is not as easy as it sounds (for me at least). But with enough practice, I'm finally getting the hang of it. This doesn't leave a heavy scent as some dry shampoo sprays but along with absorbing oil from my scalp, it also help absorb some odor. 
• Now $26/USD for just 2oz may sound like a lot but trust me a little does go a long way. Especially if you have dark hair like me. Apply sparingly and rub it in vigorously. Add more if needed, ha, just like salt! Okay, anyway...this is the one product I can count on to give me full, sexy, bed head hair. Blast some heat from your blow dryer, if accessible, to really amplify volume.I finish with just a touch of hair oil to the tips of my hair to smooth any frizzy strands. 
• I really love how this adds extra texture and grip to the hair. It really aids when I want to do a ponytail with a bit of height on the crown. It also adds wonder to top-knot days.
• I used it here on a freshly shampooed hair:

• Not as full but not bad considering this was after a particularly sweaty (at home) gym session. 
• I even got great service from my cafeteria one morning after using this product to freshen up my unshampooed post-workout 'do. Yes, the cafeteria at my work and yes, food is free but I did get extra small talk, pleasantry and maybe even more eggs in my breakfast as usual! 
• I can imagine the possibilities if I were still a single gal at bar with glorious sexy hair but I'm now mom at home drinking whiskey shots on my kitchen counter top with my lovely husband while our adorable daughter is sleeping. 
• My husband does love when I vamp it up with big hair and smoky eyes, he is from New Jersey after all. But then again he loves me in the morning with a bare face, glasses and flat hair. 
• Thanks Bumble for giving me a product to remind me that I can be vixen no matter the situation and location! I'll definitely be back for more once I spray the sad last shot of powder on to my limp locks.

When Is It Okay to Be a Narcissist?

When it's spelled NARSISSIST! And it's in the form of an awesome eye shadow palette.

This little lovely was sent to me for consideration from the generous PR crew at NARS. I am a full fledged NARSISSIST and couldn't be more proud! In fact, this is the only palette I have been using exclusively for the past three weeks. I even went away on a family trip and instead of stuffing my over sized makeup bags with solo pans and shadow palettes. I took this one palette. I had more room for those extra tubes of nude pink glosses I can never have enough of at all times. It really hasn't disappointed me yet! There may be a few repeating shades I already own, it doesn't bother me. I'm so pleased that I have a backup and it's housed with a smartly edited set!

I will admit that I received this early February and I'm now just getting around to writing this review. 

BAD BLOGGER!

This is what happens when you have a new demanding job, a long work commute, and still trying to maintain the title of "Awesome Mom and Wife"! However, this allowed me to really test this palette out and give a fair assessment. So how do I feel about this palette?

I feel that each row is arranged by theme: top row - neutral, middle row - smoky nudes, third row - taupe, charcoal smoky eyes. But I do like to mix up colors and also layer. If I want a softly lined eye, I use Pandora (black) along the top and bottom lash lines.

I still can't get over just how easy these shades are to pair or wear solo for days that you just don't want to wear blend more than two shadows together.

Here's just a small sample how I've been wearing these shades:

The shades I wear almost daily: Ashes to Ashes, Nepal and Madrague/Madrague II. Neutrals are my fall back but when I'm feeling extra saucy and/or I'm going out I'll dip my shadow brushes into Lhasa, Bad Behavior and Pandora as my outer-v accent and lower lash smoker. I use Bali (neutral brown) to fill in my brows - one of the best shades I have discovered. It keeps my brows looking full and natural and it's also a great shade to use as a contour. I love using Madrague (matte caramel) as my eye socket contour. This shade lends a bit of deeper contrast when using the lighter shades on my lid, like soft rose Nepal or matte cream, Madrague II. But when using with a slightly deeper mocha taupe, Ashes to Ashes or taupe grey, Lhasa - Madrague softens and lightly diffuses the color and lending a hand to seemlessly blend with a darker, outer-v shade. I have been loving Coconut Grove, Brousse, and Bad Behavior (when using a heavier hand in application). As usual, when paired with a great eye primer or even concealer on the lid, these shades will stay on your lids the entire day until you are ready to swipe it off with your best eye makeup remover.

The first time I received this, I was really hesitant to even swatch each pan. And then the biggest decision - which shade do I try first? I am so glad I have this beautifully edited palette in my collection - it's going to solve a lot groggy morning problems like, "shit, I overslept and I need to leave the house in thirty minutes!"

Side note - in the photo of me in top right corner I'm sporting Love blush and Adelaide Illuminator from the Final Cut collection (NARS). This was also sent to me for consideration. This tea rose blush is very subtle on my tan skin but it's just as beautiful if it were worn by someone with a fairer complexion. I'll post a swatch photo soon. And by soon, I mean before the month is over. Love is a gorgeous shade for a soft pop of pink on my cheeks when I'm wearing both smoky or subtle neutral shaded lids. A Peek at NARS' SPRING 2014 High Seize Collection

Here's a very long overdue post.

Yeah, newsflash...I know! Quick update on where I've been - I quit my job in SF and now currently working in Silicon Valley for a big internet company. That's all I'll say! Also, my new job is really consuming lots of my time and sadly that last thing I want to do is review my beloved beauty products that seem to give me sad puppy dog eyes as I look at them on my sad bathroom counter!

Yes, I sometimes view inanimate objects as breathing things...just go with it!

Recently the good, kind folks at NARS treated me with a sample of the recent Spring 2014 High Seize collection. And I am inspired to write again! Rich, aquatic and anchored in glamour. This collection will really have you craving a warm yacht holiday escape from the dreaded polar vortex!

The new items have me digging deep in over stuffed cosmetic pouches to pull out more NARS products that I have been neglecting. I have rediscovered my love for NARS and just how easy I can pull a look together with these colors for those early morning that I don't have a full hour to get ready because I have to get out the door to drive up to almost an hour to work each morning. Glad to report that I have two new items to add to the mix!

Na Pali Coast Multiple:

Na Pali Coast is located on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii. This beautiful rose peach shimmer does a very easy job of evoking walking along a balmy island shore right at dusk. It is gorgeous! As you know the multiple is a product that is that - multi-purpose for your face. Honestly, I just use it to highlight cheekbones or as a cream rouge. The darker shades I tend to use for both cheeks and lips.

I used it today to keep my complexion warm while I walked the cold, wet streets of SF this morning:

I have a love/hate relationship with the Multiple - it's a great highlighter but because my skin is dark I sometimes have to pack it on just to show up on my cheeks. If it's a shimmer then I feel too frosty - okay for Vegas, per se but not so much for a suburb south of SF. Also, it never lasts more than two hours on me. My skin sucks it right up. I have to take it with me so I can reapply. But I'll probably never stop buying them because I do love it's portability and the right shades do wonders for my look and mood. As you can tell, by my beanie, I am freezing my ass off but this glowing peachy rose cream makes me look a bit sun kissed!

Puerta Del Sol
Named after the busy town square in Madrid, Spain. It's a lovely parrot green shimmer.

I was lucky enough to visit Madrid a few years ago. I do remember visiting this square and parrot green shimmer doesn't come to mind. Until I came across this photo:

I miss Spain :(

Eye liners vibrant like this are often reserved for my bottom water lines to brighten my eyes.

A beautiful shimmering jade on my eyes. But let's talk staying power - I didn't have to touch up the color till four hours later. And that's just on my water lines! I need to purchase Via Veneto (black) next time I'm at a NARS counter. That long wear strength is just ridiculous!

This collection also feature two new dazzling shadow duos - need Kauai because it features the shade of the year - orchid! There are also two new polishes, two larger than life glosses, a new satin lip pencil and another larger than life eye liner. These shades got me in full vacay mode - I'll be back at the NARS counter soon.

Ugh, guess that means I need to clean out my makeup stash...A-G-A-I-N!

What Did I Buy?

In this week's episode of Lex's luxurious beauty buys, I throw that phrase around loosely, I share with you what I bought at the last Sephora's VIB sale:

This beauty sponge has been making its way around the beauty blog blocks and I was curious. But would this $19.95 sponge really make a difference in the way foundation lays on my skin? I've even seen this used on video tutorials to apply foundation and concealer with convincing accolades. Okay, I was convinced. I was going to buy this but only on sale.

I've tried this damp to stipple my tinted moisturizer,creamy compact foundation and the pointed tip is convenient to blend concealer under my eyes and at the corners. It did make my makeup look natural and not look like it was just sitting on my skin - it does blend nicely. I also like that it's soft to the touch. However, it will remain stained by your foundation and concealers, no matter how much you try to clean it. I use the cheaper alternate - baby shampoo. It was also recommended by a sales associate is to try a very light drop of dish washing liquid to remove any lingering grease. I'm not exactly sure just how long this will last but I probably won't replace it because of it's price tag.

So do you need this? It's really up to you. If you like using your foundation brush or inexpensive sponge version - stick with that. I am trying this out of pure curiosity. It's not an entirely big loss - I do like the color pink!

em michelle phan: Arched Defining Brow Liners

I have a confession to make - I have never watched a Michelle Phan makeup tutorial on her YouTube channel, up until recently. And if you are a blogger and into makeup, you have heard of her. If not then you must have waken up under a rock...a very big, heavy rock. She was innovative early in her tutorial videos by adopting a voice over format. It's a very documentary like feel. As a former art student, she approaches makeup application like art work. And anyone that mimics their tutorials like the awesome PBS Bob Ross instructional show, is extra cool in my book. She was named a video makeup artist by Lancome and has recently launcher her own cosmetics line, EM Michelle Phan.

I am a very, very lucky girl to have received an invitation to try out some of her products.

Arched Defining Brow Liners:

There are five shades to choose from: ash blonde, medium brown, caramel, brunette and black. Since I wasn't sure just how dark the black pencil was I opted for both the brunette and black pencils. I like that these are self sharpening and there's a spoolie on the other end for blending.

Brunette has a bit of red in it and black is not what you think. It's a dark neutral brown that has a bit of grey in it.

This is a great shade for the days where I don't want to do a heavily shaded lid or on the weekends when I'm running errands with my daughter and I just want to keep my makeup super simple.

I have been blending the two shades together and I'm loving the results:

I love that it's not too dark and it looks like it could be my actual brows if I were blessed with naturally dark and full eye brows! 

For the past twenty years, I've been a shadow and slanted brush kind of girl. In fact, it would take me less than five minutes to do both brows. Then again, that's on a good day. I actually shunned all pencils, only using to fill sparse sections of my arches. The pencils I have used are often waxy and weren't that great. I love the formula of this pencil, just enough creaminess to go on easily but still sturdy to be long lasting and it blends like a dream with the spoolie brush. I am very impressed with this product, as I take my brows seriously. 

Yes, I'm that girl that doesn't leave the house without her brows on to go on a four mile run on the weekends. 

On that note, these pencils do not fade even after an intense workout. The irony is I have bangs again and my brows are covered for the most part. Well luckily, I found this pencil to define and darken my brows when my bangs are blown haphazardly on a windy day.

Makeovers: Not Just for the Jilted....

I've taken a bit of time off, just in case you haven't noticed. Well, a few things have happened - busy workload and a anxious feeling about my status since the sale of half of the company, where I work and fulfilling my duties as my sister's maid of honor for her wedding last weekend.

The problem is the longer I stay away it becomes so easy to slack. And if slacking were a career, I'd be CEO!

So, I'm getting off my lazy butt to just share a few new things I have tried out.

On my birthday, last month, I enlisted the help of NARS makeup artist, Laura, to give me a hot birthday look for my karaoke outing. I also got a chance to visit the NARS boutique in the Lower Pac Heights neighborhood, SF.

Even the outside exterior has a very sleek, minimal look. The window display was sparse but that didn't mean there wasn't an impact on those window shopping in the neighborhood.

The inside of the shop, did not disappoint either. I love this little book collection nestled above the makeshift fireplace.

But let's get back to why you guys are here. The makeover and the amount it took to transform me into a smoky karaoke chanteuse.

The wonderful makeup artist, Linda talked me into beefing up my brows. Not just darkening but giving me full throttle editorial brows. I was scared but I thought "what the hell, I'm 39 and like Nars says - it's just makeup..."

Here's the result:

I know not that bad but I've been rocking a slim brow for years and years. By the end of the day, I was use to it and really giving thought to getting a prescription for a hair growth treatment from my dermatologist. The dark brow really complimented my strong lined smoky eyes with copper shadows.

My current favorite NARS product - eye paint. I really need to get that review out since it's been about a month and a half of use - ugh, I'm a lazy a**hole I know!

I love how much light comes into this boutique. The placement of the makeup stations are ideal, not for anonymity from the public but at least you'll really see how your makeup looks in natural lighting. 

I can't wait to return to this shop for some holiday shopping, especially since the Guy Bourdain/NARS gifting collection has debuted.

My makeup was a hit at karaoke that night, my face didn't melt but then again I wasn't dancing with 500 other people in a packed club, thankfully. 

After trying a different brow from what I was use to, I start to think more about my looks and what else I could improve. I think it's because I'm 39 now and really not that far from 40 but don't worry, I'm not looking into medical procedures (well, never say never....)

I really started thinking more and more about my hair and what I wanted to do next. Go back to light brown/dark blonde highlights? No, that's an upkeep expense I can't keep up with. Cut into a cute choppy LOB that a lot of off duty supermodels have been rocking? No, I took way too long growing it this long and plus I'm not 5'10, 105 lbs and 23 yrs. old. Just kidding...no judgments here...just lacking courage. 

What else could I do? Well, I've been thinking about a look that I really loved and was my trademark before my daughter was born - bangs.Yes, it is upkeep but it would just be a few bucks and my hair stylist's salon is about 5-7 minutes walking distance from my office. 

I had the longest time debating and probable exhausted everyone with their thoughts, my husband especially. I had to take the advice I given to others when they want to change their hair, "It's just hair, it'll grow back"

Yeah it'll grow back, albeit a long year or two, but I'll just give my bitching and moaning to myself when I'm in the awkward pinning my bangs back, grow-out phase.
