Nordstrom Triple Points Weekend

Hey Nordstrom card holding fans, you knew what last weekend was, right? For those of you that don't know what the hell I'm talking about it was triple points weekend for Nordstrom card holders. Meaning that for every item purchased you not only earned one point per dollar spent - you earned 3pt per dollar! When you collect 2000 points you earn a Nordstrom note, $20 coupon off your next purchase.

So what did I buy? My purchases were pretty modest but they were items on my radar list:

From the top, a pair of classic cat eye tortoiseshell framed sunglasses by Kate Spade. I love Kate Spade shades - my other favorite pair of shades I own are my Kate Spade aviators. Also, my shades need some updating.

The bright fuchsia gloss is of course part of the recent Roses Ultimes de Chanel Glossimer/Nail collection. I love this gloss and I will post a look soon. And of course, my shadow collection is not complete without this very classic and one size fits all taupe shimmer, Safari. Such a beautiful nude on my eye that I'm kicking myself for not buying it years sooner. Also, I heard a nasty rumor that this is being discontinued - I hope the counter manager was wrong. Luckily, I snagged the last one she had.

My plan is to be responsible and pay off my bill before the next points event happens - I better check their calendar to get ready. Another great thing being about their fashion rewards program? On a day you  know you'll be making that huge purchase, you can arrange for a triple points day (you are only allowed one day).

Also, I am told that another HUGE NARS event will occur at the Westfield Nordstrom, downtown SF.

You know I have to be ready for that one!!

YDK Look of the Day

If there is one thing Mr. Lex more than anything, aside from his NY Giants, bacon, Baseball, his girls, it's EFFICIENCY!

I hope he's proud of my efficiency creating several looks from just one palette: UD's latest, NAKED 2.

Today, I embrace another glitter bomb shadow - YDK, a cool mocha bronze loaded with chunky golden, microglitter.

Once again, Tease (taupe) is used in the crease, Snakebite (golden brown, bronze shimmer). I complete the look with Foxy as my brow high light shade (yes, again!). This time I went with my favorite golden bronze liner, UD 24/7 Waterproof Eye Liner in Smog on top and bottom lash line. I gently smoke my lower lash line by smudging with my MAC #219 brush. Eyes are finished with layers of GA's Eye to Kill Mascara.

Today I went with on of my favorite Chanel Glossimer in Mystic (described as a shimmery copper red but it almost takes a pink tone on my lips). Blush is NARS G-Spot Multiple and I contoured with Edward Bess Bronzer in Daydream.

Like with Chopper, have makeup remover within arm's reach...there will be some fallout. But this is not the glitterbomb that Chopper can be!

What's in my makeup bag and a new music find!

Since I failed to produce a September favorites post, I have done a piece that I enjoy seeing on my fellow blogging sites: a peek into my makeup bag for the week of Oct. 16.

12. Cargo bronzing brush - I use this a lot for bronzer but also to diffuse any harsh lines from my blush - the bonus - I got this for free for participating in a Cargo Marketing Study group at Sephora headquarters years ago!
13. Edward Bess Ultra Luminous Bronzer - Daydream, a meduium golden brown without any red/orange tones. It does have a little bit of shimmer but it isn't overkill.
14. Fragrance - I always have to have a fragrance sample in most of my bags - Bond No. 9 signature and Tom Ford Black Orchid. Two very sensual fragrances that keep me feeling good even if I look really tired!

Not only was this a surprise that I can pack this much in what looks like a small pouch but it also helps me edit what I need to bring with me. It also lightens my purse!


A side note:
I work as an administrative assistant, a modern day secretary, so my mornings consist of mindless report preparation for my bosses. I usually pop my ear buds in and listen to some music to get me by.

Last week, I turn to one of my favorite music blogs and was turned to this Chilean rapper. I looked her up and I'm now watching and listening to her videos on you tube.

Ana Tijoux, you make me want to brush up on my Spanish skills. Your flow and beats are that dope. Yes, I did say dope because I am that old!

Happy Birthday to Me...

Today I turn 37 and I'm still trying to get use to saying that because I think 36 sounds much better than saying, "I'm 37" then again saying "I'm 35" sounds even better than that. But I'm a good sport, I will play along and age just like everyone else. For the past year I have been really diligent with wearing sunscreen, applying under eye cream at all times and applying firming lotions to my neck and I've been doing this daily. At the moment, I am trying to find the best anti-wrinkling serums for under $100 and it's a challenge.

Now I just need to remember to take that daily multi-vitamin!

I like to buy birthday treats for myself and of course it's in the form of makeup. Last year I was in NYC so I blew $200 at the Edward Bess counter at Bergdorf Goodman but the best part was Edward did my makeup personally for my birthday dinner that night at Balthazar. It was truly an awesome birthday. Edward taught me how to use his products properly - I love using his Daydream bronzer as an everyday powder - right on top of my tinted moisturizer.

This year I opted for a STAY-CATION because it's been a tough year and our pockets are a bit thin. Plus,  not being at work for a week is like a great birthday gift from my work! We'll have lunch today, somewhere outdoors to celebrate the arrival of Indian Summer here in SF - the best time here, in my opinion. I'll try to fit in a manicure/pedicure today. Tonight will be drinks with my husband, sister and our good friend - expect pics!

On to my birthday treats:

My first LMdB products - an eye shadow and lip gloss. The Nordstrom counter was a bit slim in the Lip Cream department but I will be back for that! Yes, another glossimer because they are awesome and I am an extremely weak, WEAK girl when it comes to Chanel.

I  look forward to this day - as a little girl, I knew it meant new Barbie dolls and as an adult it means celebrating with my girls and my husband with a fabulous dinner and cocktails. The greatest gifts have been my daughter, my husband, my family and friends. I try to wake-up everyday with a smile on my face honoring these people. It's hard to do most days but once I am up and think about them, I know everything will be okay.

And I am wonderfully blessed by you, the readers, for just stopping by and reading my thoughts, looking at my not so greatly lit photos and leaving wonderful comments.

However, I think if my husband surprised me with this BARBIE doll I would squeal with delight like a 5yr. old!

She would also need a collection of shoes since my biggest pet peeve was losing a shoe!

Smog

Apparently, the marketing group at Urban Decay has a different concept of what smog looks like.

Hmm...I'll have to rethink my argument.

Urban Decay's smog color is definitely a sexier version of what I recall from spending summers in Southern California with my relatives as a little girl. UD's Smog is a deep brown with a golden shimmer and irridescent sparkle, a very sensual looking bronze and one of my all time favorite UD eye shadows so you know I was super excited to find this shade as a liquid liner.

Lately, I've been eye lining obsessed and as a fan of the UD 24/7 collection, you know I couldn't wait to get my hands on a bottle of this stuff. Especially since I got over my fear of liquid liners. Okay so this may not be the first time I've used one but I usually favor pencils. Liquid sometimes accentuates any dry flaky parts of my eye - making any eczema outbreaks in this area look that much worse. Also, I'll forget I'm wearing it and rub my eye. It's usually not a pretty look after I realize I just ruined a perfectly black lined eye.

Chanel Inimitable Noir Mascara

The brush tip is pretty flexible and since I like a more firm, felt tip I was a bit worried. Would I be able to have any control of this brush?

I have been using this for the past week and I now feel pretty confident using this but if you are a pro with type of liquid liner than this will be a cake walk. Just do remember to shake the bottle well before using. This is an easy color to wear. It's subtle, therefore low maintenance. I love this shade best with nothing more than MAC Indianwood Paint Pot on my lids and lots of layers of black mascara.

It is long wearing after it sets (takes about 55 seconds) and it will stay put. Glad to report that it doesn't irritate my eyes and I've been having bad bouts of allergies lately. It took some gentle rubbing with my Neutrogena oil-free eye makeup remover to get it all off. And once the color lifts, it flakes off.

Final assessment: I am thinking about which color to try next.

Rose Tourbillon...a closer look

I wanted to share my initial thoughts on my first Chanel blush. At this point, I'm really wondering why it took me so long to purchase one. I guess, I am just really loyal to what I already like - NARS blushes and the few MAC blushes that are currently in my stash. I guess Chanel still intimidates me a bit. I don't feel like I'm really a Chanel type of gal - I'm a bit rough around the edges while the Chanel lady is pristine, elegant, drinks tea and doesn't stomp around like a Clydesdale horse when she walks. Plus, sometimes I feel that the colors don't always suit me - I really have to dig around and try a lot of colors to find something that will work.

That's okay because I have developed a patience and willingness to try and find a treasure that will work for me.

Looking at my stash, I noticed that I don't have a whole lot of bright, hot pink, fuchsia blushes. From my understanding this was originally released as an Asia exclusive item. Since, I'm not the biggest Chanel fan it slipped my beauty radar. But once my favorite Chanel S.A. - the delightful, Ms. M - showed it to me, I was smitten.

I also want to give a special shout-out to Pink Sith for piquing my curiosity even more!

It pulls warm on my NC42 skin. I don't even mind the rose scent. It has a very fine, subtle shimmer. It's lovely. I don't have to dab this lightly on my cheeks like I do with my favorite blushes from NARS, that has the tendency to go on quite dramatic if you are not careful.

YOU GOT MAIL!

I loved hearing that during my early days of using AOL. Wow, that seems so long ago. However, I still love receiving mail here at work. Especially when it's this:

Chanel Illusion D'Ombre

Yes, I jumped on the bandwagon but that's only because I have an extremely soft spot for cream shadows. I have this romantic notion that with the sweep of a finger, I can have that almost natural eye look in just 2 minutes. But no matter how hard I try, I will need at least three other products to get my eyes look semi-awake!

Chanel Illusion D'Ombre in Emerveille does a great job of getting me look awake with just mascara (well almost, I still need to have a perfectly done brow!)

I tried to hold out and snap a picture of this lovely peach shadow before dipping the brush into the mousse-like texture but I am an extremely weak individual!

And here it is compared to my beloved soft peach gold MAC Paint Pot in Rubenesque.

Emerveille pulls on the cool side compared to the warm golden sheen of Rubenesque. It almost looks like a peach champagne shade with a lovely finely milled shimmer. Normally, this would make me walk away but there's something about this that I just love on my lids. Yes, it gives me that "my eyes but better" look.

Which is a good thing when you barely had six hours of sleep because you have to retrain yourself to sleep regular hours during the week coming off a vacation week.

Here it is on my lids and Chanel Inimitable Mascara - Noir on my lashes/NARS Larger than Life Lengthening Mascara - Black layered with it. MAC Espresso e/s on my brows.
I used the brush included with the shadow pot. Then I blended the color with my ring finger to my brow bone to diffuse any harsh lines or deposits of color settling in one spot.

For just a hint of definition/color - I added NARS Outremer (bright true blue) on 3/4 of my lower lash line and the outer corner of my top lashline with a dry slanted brush (MAC #266). I will wet the brush next time to see if I get more of an intense color. I didn't add any other shadow. I think this is as basic as it gets for me.

I am happy with my color choice and I cannot wait to pick up another one (or two) of the new Chanel Illusion D'Ombre. I am even more thankful that these are permanent and I don't have to rush back to the counter.

As if that's the only reason I need to run back to the Chanel counter!

I'm back!

So I had a lovely time off in Disneyland and visiting with my relatives in Orange County. I did make time to do some quality outlet shopping as well as picking up a few things at the local Nordstrom on the first official day of their annual Anniversary Sale.

I just wanted to share a few pictures of some of my loot - yes, I realize I said SOME...

I love this palette because it consists of NARS single shadows and surprisingly, I don't own any of them until now.

I also picked up a Chanel glossimer from the Fall collection, #158/Braise, copper rose with gold shimmer and I am waiting for the Chanel  Rose Tourbillon Joues Contraste (blush) that's a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale exclusive. It'll be the one thing I'm waiting for in the mail. I'm super anxious about this because it's my first Chanel blush. Now I just have to decide what my first Chanel eye palette will be - any suggestions?

I even bought three new pairs of shoes - 1 pair from the Citadel outlet and 2 pairs from the Nordstrom sale. I promise pictures will be coming soon. I'm really excited to bust these out - like 'first day of school excited' but I still have to remind myself that technically it's still Summer and I need to enjoy the long days even though the sunny days are far and few between here up North.

The weather was perfect while in Anaheim - mid to upper 70's for the most part. I got lucky on Sunday, the fog actually burned off and we had lovely clear skies and got to enjoy a lovely sunset from our front window.

Unfortunately, the mini princess was sick the entire vacation but she did manage to enjoy herself while seeing the Disney Princesses and riding the carousel (a total of 6 times over the course of a 2-day visit).

June Favorites

I never post my favorites for a particular month and since it's the first week of July, no time like the present to reflect on what I was crushing in the month of June!

I think the break out star has been my NARS Multiple in South Beach, a lovely shimmering apricot, just because I never really understood the proper way to use it. Now, I can't leave the house without it on my face. I love patting it on tops of my cheekbones to my temples or I use it blended on my apples layering another blush on top of it - this is how I get NARS Orgasm to show up on my warm skin. Another stand out is a product that I haven't used in ages but use to wear daily more than ten years ago - MAC Chestnut liner. This intense brown liner warms up the pink copper NARS Hot Voodoo lipstick.

It should no surprise to anyone that my summer choices consist of peach, orange, coral blushes, or golden shadows. I am still trying to get the hang of the NARS Dogon duo because I still feel that the duo chrome (left) shadow side is light on me and I have to apply up to 3 layers of this color to get the intensity that I want. I do love the blackened blue (right) for summer smoky night eyes.

With Fall collections launching right now in July, I am curious to see what I'll be using the most. Even though, the weather in Daly City, CA is a constant sad, gray fog and I come to work in sunny 70 degree weather in SF, it'll be a struggle between moody, fall colors and happy, bronzey golds.

Silver Eyes

If you have read my blog semi-regularly, you know that I'm all about a sexy bronzy or antique gold eye. I decided to try out a silver look. Because it's a cool tone, sometimes it has the effect of making my eyes look like I have an eczema outbreak. My skin takes to the warm bronzes/gold easier. The irony, I own and wear more silver jewelry than gold.

I wanted to try the silver pigment, from the Crushed Metallic stackable pigment quad of MAC's Surf Baby collection.

It just looks a bit much - yes, perhaps I should have used a lighter hand but I have a feeling I would have added more just because that's the way I am. In the crease I added a soft gold brown (MAC Soba) and I layered a black with red shimmer (MAC Smut) on top of Soba and the outer V. I complete with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and layers of Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir.

By the end of the night, the area around my eyes looked irritated and I also looked 10 yrs older. It may take further convincing and experimentation to make this work. In the past I have worn silvers that have bordered on the cool bluish, gray side and that has worked. I guess I just can't pull of that Reynold's Wrap foil silver.

Do any of you guys love wearing bold silver shadows? Any suggestions?

Finding My Inspiration

So last Saturday, one of my girlfriends and I head to Saks in Downtown SF and were treated to a NARS makeover. I must be on speed dial for certain NARS sales associates at various retailers because I am often contacted when the National Makeup Artist for the line is in town. This also coincided with Saks beauty event - free beach tote with a purchase of $85/over.

I won't go into a whole lot of detail of my makeover with Hank Hoffman, who's worked with J Lo, Kim Kardashian, you know pretty much the Hollywood Bombshell set. Naturally, I felt that I was in good hands. I will say that he's got me craving the Exotic Dance duo - he applied both shades on my lids with his fingers - mixed them together to give it a wet appearance. He must have blended 7 colors in total on my eyes - I got compliments from every sales associate that walked passed me and my girlfriend just gushed over how much she wished Hank would have done her eyes as well. But to the defense of her M.A. she used the Dogon duo on her and it was just as lovely. Dogon looked so different on her than on me.

From what I can remember Exotic Duo (both sides layered) was used and applied with his fingertip. Then I believe he used Sophia/New York in  the crease. Daphne was also layered on top of Sophia in the outer V. He used Eyliner Stylo in Nuits Blanches to line 3/4 on my top and bottom lashlines. He softened the cat eye with Pandora (black side).

He used Torrid (coral shimmer) blush on me - still thinking about picking that one up because you know I can never have enough NARS blushes - and then he also layered this into my crease.

Yeah, he's crazy like that.

So what did I pick up?

After much debate and inner turmoil, I only picked up the book - Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself. And I am so happy that I did. I could have easily spend over a $100 dollors on more product but this book is actually a new inspiration for me. I love looking at these pictures and I really love the acetate transparent overlay with notes and diagrams where certain shades where applied. It acts as a beauty blueprint. I love how he uses Women and Men of various ages and ethnicities so you can see how color translates and anyone can really use the same shade if they are creative and patient enough to experiment. And because the NARS S.A. is a big sweetheart she still gave me the giveaway bag with a travel sized NARS Makeup Primer w/SPF 20. This is why it pays to be a regular!

Thinking back on Hank's shadow technique - using his fingers - I know this is not revolutionary but it's something I don't do often. I apply this technique on a duo that hasn't seen the light of day in months.

The glitter bomb that is Hula Hula.

Left side is a pretty golden rose and the right side is like a golden hazelnut (it's a bit brighter in person). What's really apparent are those CHUNKS of GLITTER! I know that a lot of bloggers and I have faced challenges with this duo. Do you use Fyrinnae's epoxy or UDPP or even TFSI? I just layered it on top of TFSI (Two Faced Shadow Insurance) on my lids applied the right side first and then I layered the golden pink on top of that. I then took MAC's Showstopper (Matte blackened brown) and applied it into my crease and outer V. I line with the Eyeliner Stylo and apply the black side of Pandora to soften the line - top and bottom lash line. I apply many coats of Chanel's Inmitable mascara in Black as my last step.

I am pretty sure I used Abyssinia as my brow bone highlight - I just remember mentioning that now. Yes, I still see glitter fallout because it's pretty inavoidable with this duo but for the first time I'm not annoyed. I'm just excited that this book has got me excited to play with my makeup again. Also, not just with my NARS collection but everything I have will get a chance to come out of hiding.

But it also created new cravings to colors I never thought about using. Luckily the colors I am now obsessing over are part of the NARS permanent collection.

Turning a Chanel Loss into a Big Win!

I don't own a whole lot of Chanel products probably because of the hefty price tag attached to it. Yes, I only have a handful of glosses, eye pencils and lipsticks. Sadly, I had to return the two Rouge Coco Shines I reviewed a few weeks ago because once the dust settled I realized I only wanted them because everyone seemed to be loving them. I should have learned from the heartbreak of trying to obtain a Limited Edition MAC piece - for the most part, it's hype. Okay, wait I am not saying a classic Chanel item is like a flashy MAC Limited Edition Mineralize Finish Powder. I am just reminding myself that I shouldn't always follow everyone else, especially if it's going to be part of a permanent collection. I didn't wasn't feeling the RCS because I didn't like how once the color fades it would settle in the crevices of my lips - not cute. Maybe I need to try a different color. Also, I have way too many orange/red and coral glosses - something I never thought I would say.

Okay so luckily I was able to redeem my Chanel loss with a current upgrade from the Summer 2011, Les Fleurs D'Ete Chanel - the Bronze Corail palette:

Yes, the one on the right. As you can see the tester has been a bit beat up but the color on this picture is better and is not as flat as this:

The pearly, peachy champagne highlight shade is a new favorite - it gives my tan skin a lovely glow. Especially when combined with my favorite liquid highlighter than is still on my shopping list:

Instead of showing you guys a picture of this traditionally on my cheeks, I want to share on how the top 3 shades of this palette looks on my eyes.

So first off  I used UD Primer Potion in Greed (gold shimmer)
Lid is the first shade of the palette - light golden brown shimmer stripe
Crease - third shade of palette - bronze chocolate with coral bits of shimmer stripe
Highlight - second shade - champagne stripe.

I finished with LM Caviar liner in Chestnut and lots of black mascara - Chanel Inimitable Intense.

Lips: LM Lip Glace in Ambre Rose

Face - LM Tinted Moisturizer, Caramel/ Chanel Bronze Corail Palette.

For $50, I'd say I'm getting my money's worth and I'm becoming a better multi-tasker. I am sensing a new, unhealthy addiction to bronzers. This is what happens when you live in the fog!
